I’ve always wanted to develop for the Mac. When the iPhone came out, I wanted to develop even more. I’ve bought a few books on Cocoa and Objective-C but it never amounted to anything.
The reason? No inspiration. I could never think of any apps that hadn’t been made, and while I could find a few ways to improve on existing apps, that doesn’t sound like much fun.
That all changed a few weeks ago. My wife and I were having breakfast out with our 20 month old daughter. She’s actually really great at restaurants, but this wasn’t a good day. Lots of fussing, food was still a ways out, had to distract her somehow. So I pulled out my iPhone and started flipping through apps, trying to find something I could distract her with.
Then it hit me, I finally had something to give me ideas for apps. They don’t need to be complicated, they just need to do the job. I’ll bet I’m not alone, there’s a ton of parents with kids who would love to have a little 2 minute time waster in their pockets. I’ll make apps for her as old as she is now, and new apps will evolve as she gets older. It’s a perfect situation for development.
So that’s the story, let’s see how it pans out.
